How is the System Powered?Updated 2 days ago

Powering a Split System

Mini splits are powered at the outdoor unit only. Every indoor unit that is connected to the outdoor unit will be powered by the outdoor unit via the communication cable that connects them together. The outdoor unit must be hard-wired to a dedicated circuit breaker to comply with NEC in most areas, using fuses of proper amperage and corresponding rated wire. A disconnect box as well as a surge protector are also highly recommended.

All systems use 3-conductor wire. The 110/120 (115V) systems are powered as Line, Neutral, and Ground (typically colored Black, White, and Green), while 208/240 (230V) systems are powered with two hot lines (Black and Red) and a Green ground (no neutral is used).

Note that 115V system must use a single-pole breaker and 230V systems require a double-pole breaker. Tandem breakers are not allowed.

Central (Ducted) Split systems are always 230VAC and require hardwiring both the outside condensing section as well as the indoor air handler unit to a dedicated breaker.
